On May 20, 2016, Minister Mike Bernier and Christy Clark announced $100 million in funding to the Surrey School District. Specific to the South Newton Community, Sullivan Elementary and Ecole Woodward Hill will receive additions to their schools. These additions, while welcome, do not solve the capacity issues in our neighbourhood. The French Immersion program has been reduced by half. Sullivan Elementary still has undrinkable water. Our neighbourhood is still far over capacity even when these additions are completed. Further, Christy Clark announced the additions would be complete by school opening 2017 however, this will not be the case. The District does not have the PDR's (plans) yet completed and approved, which is a first step that takes months. Then contractors need to be hired. This neighbourhood is in dire need for another elementary school and another high school.
This page was designed to provide up-to-date information on capacity issues to those that live in the South Newton Community of Schools. Schools included are:
5 of these elementary schools are within a 10 block radius (152nd to 142nd, between 60th and 64th) and it's not enough. The District also owns property at 142nd and 59th. That would make 3 school properties on the same street (142nd). This is how quickly and densely this neighbourhood is being built. |
