Our Platform

Surrey students matter
and they should all have equal access to an education system that meets their individual needs;
where students are safe and fully included in their classrooms, to become active, contributing members of our community.

A Trustees role is to provide sound fiduciary oversight, fiscal responsibility, governance, and
be the much needed voice of advocacy with other politicians and the community.

We can not have silent Trustees any longer, because Surrey kids matter!

All students matter and
need safe schools.

Our vision for safe and supported schools:

  • All students receive full classroom supports to reach their potential.

  • All students have access to positive space for conversations about diversity and acceptance.

  • After-school programs are available to keep kids active and free from gang recruitment.

  • Students have access to lead-free drinking water in their schools.

  • Schools with asbestos requiring additions will be replaced.
Surrey Students NOW will:

It matters when Surrey
students miss out on
resources and supports for their schools and classrooms.

This continues to happen because:

  • $8 million is spent annually on portable maintenance.

  • Surrey students receive $200 less (that’s $14 MILLION every year!) than Vancouver students.

Our vision for funding priorities include:

  • students with special needs receiving full supports.

  • staff no longer paying for classroom resources.

  • students having access to music, library, and other fine arts.
Surrey Students NOW will:

Work with the Province and
Minister of Education to:
Picture
hold the government to account on their promise to rid Surrey of portables.

Picture
determine and correct why Vancouver receives more student funding.

Picture
have a strong voice at the BC Public Service Employers Association (BCPSEA) table.

Picture
reduce the gap between the needs of our students and the mandatory balanced budget.

It matters when schools are overpopulated.

Our vision is for right-sized schools so:

  • students have access and can fully participate in activities including sports, fine arts, club, and music.

  • students have increased access to shared school spaces like the library, gym, and playground.

  • music rooms, computer labs, and other specialty areas are not converted into classrooms.
Surrey Students NOW will:

Work with City Council to ensure:
Picture
land is set aside for future schools.

Picture
permits for schools are expedited.

Picture
District participation takes place at City Council meetings.

Picture
the School Site Acquisition Charge is updated to continuously reflect market values.

Picture
city frontage and street improvements for schools are paid for by the City, not the District.

Picture
new secondary schools are built as community hubs with access to public libraries and recreation                       centres.
