What's New?

January 26, 2016

Surrey Students NOW are thrilled that the District had such a large financial announcement today to the tune of $217m over 3 years.

We want to say thank you to everyone who advocated in support of this issue.

However, our work is not done.

A policy change to deal with annual $4M expenditure to fund portables from our operating budget is still needed.

We would also like to see a policy change that deals with the future school needs for Surrey as the City will continue to grow at an exponential rate.

The Province needs to revise its current funding model to address both the current needs and the future needs of students, who will be arriving at an approximate rate of 1000 new students each year.

The City and the Province both have responsibilities to provide infrastructures in a timely manner. It's unfortunate that it took a state of crisis and multiple layers of advocacy to get today's announcement.

Lastly, Surrey Students NOW want to reinforce that we are committed to continued advocacy work with the City to ensure development is managed with school infrastructure.

Thank you for your continued support and watch for upcoming Advocating for Education 101 events to learn how we can continue work together to better education in Surrey.
